Lubricating oils must fulfil the most stringent requirements under a wide range of conditions.
At low temperatures, it is essential that the oil flows easily and form an effective film on all parts that need to be lubricated. This film must also remain stable at high temperatures and may not become too thin to provide optimum lubrication under high mechanical loads.
Additives are mixed into base oils to create lubricating oils with improved lubricating performance over a wider range of temperatures. Special polymers, so-called ‘viscosity index improvers’ (VI improvers), play a decisive role in this.
These high-performance polymers must be completely dissolved in the base oil and thoroughly mixed to create a homogeneous consistency. The process steps required for this can be efficiently and reliably performed with machines and systems from IKA.
